Intelligent, playful and affectionate, the Pomsky is a stubborn dog that must not "break through" even an iota of its owner's weakness, but it is few in number, because it comes into the world almost exclusively with the application of certain health measures.
You wanted to become the owner of an unusual breed of dog, but, like many future owners, you are in a dilemma about which breed to choose. If you "go" by looks, cuteness is definitely a trait of every puppy, but what's important is what comes after weeks of "cuteness" and playfulness. The Pomsky is a wonderful "designer" breed dog, i.e. a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian husky: its history only lasts for a decade, it is rare and expensive, but for the right person it can be a good choice.
The Pomsky is 25 to 38 cm tall and weighs 9 to 14 kg, and its lifespan is 12 to 15 years. Pomski coat color can be grey-white, white, brown, blue, red-brown, red-white, black-white, yellow... This dog is good for families with older children, for single owners and for all those who they have no small animals in the household.
The Pomsky is an intelligent, open and affectionate dog. However, it is not easy to raise, so the future owner should know exactly what they are getting into when acquiring this breed. Pomski is cute as a puppy, but it grows like water and very soon you will get a very active, loyal, funny, but also stubborn and loud dog that requires a lot of attention and care.
The Pomsky is a "designer" breed, which means that there are few of them in the world, but that is not the only fact that makes them few.
Due to the difference in size between Huskies and Pomeranians, their natural breeding is dangerous which means that artificial insemination is often used. If you have decided to get this dog, do not think about buying it from a breeder who has not agreed to the Code of Ethics of the International Pomsky Association. Also, be wary of a breeder who advertises a miniature pomski: breeding such small dogs is unethical, and they have tons of health problems.
Temperament and intelligence of the Pomsky breed
The Pomsky is an intelligent and active breed that needs a lot of playtime and attention. They love to have fun and are sometimes very funny. However, their most typical feature is that they are terribly loud, which does not make them ideal for keeping in an apartment. The Pomsky is also very stubborn and will prefer to do things his way. The owner will have to spend a lot of time to properly educate them. Despite its willfulness, the Pomsky is an incredibly loyal dog that will love all members of the family, but will most likely "stick" to one person. Pomski can show great caution towards unknown people, which is why he needs early socialization. Otherwise, he will constantly bark at any new person. Because of his extraordinary intelligence, he gets bored easily and quickly. If not sufficiently active or mentally stimulated, the Pomsky will turn into a chaotic destroyer. In addition, the Pomsky is prone to separation anxiety, so if the owner is often away, this breed is not a good choice for a pet.
Is Pomski a good choice for families?
When it comes to poms and small children, they will not fit in properly. The Pomski can be very impatient when children are around him, and if someone pulls his ear or tail, he knows how to bite. Small children running around can activate the prey drive in the pomski. Therefore, this breed is a better choice for families with older children who know how to treat dogs properly.
The attitude of the Pomski breed to other pets
Unfortunately, pomskis and other animals in the home will not get along well. This breed has a high prey drive, inherited from their husky parent, which means that smaller animals such as cats or guinea pigs will not be safe around them. When it comes to other dogs, things are different if they are properly socialized.
Activity and nutrition of the Pomsky breed
The Pomski Owners Association recommends a food that is high in protein and made for dogs with high energy requirements. Pomski is a dog that exercises a lot and actively, plays and runs, about 45 minutes a day, with daily short walks on a leash. The breed must have many toys, so that their boredom does not turn into destructiveness.
The good news is that Poms are very intelligent dogs, the bad news is that they are stubborn. An independent spirit, along with a high level of energy, makes them a very challenging breed to keep. The owner will need a lot of patience (and time) to train this dog. In addition, the owner must position himself as a leader from the beginning. Otherwise, the dog will manipulate any weakness the owner shows. This breed needs early socialization to learn how to behave around children, other people and pets.
Care and health of the Pomsky breed
A Pomski inherits coat color depending on which parent gets more genes, but both of his parents have a coat that must be maintained. The Husky has a double coat that sheds like crazy, and the Pomski often inherits the same coat. Pomeranians need frequent brushing, and therefore Pomskis, almost daily. Apart from daily brushing, the owner must bathe this dog about once a month.
When it comes to health, the Pomski inherits predispositions to diseases that affect his parents, the Pomeranian and the Husky. However, since this breed is also new, not all diseases that affect them are known. Serious problems include tracheal collapse, eye defects and hip dysplasia, while minor problems include dental problems and patellar luxation. There is no difference in weight and height between male and female pomskies. And their characters will have the same characteristics, so when choosing the gender of the future pet, everything comes down to the personal affinities of the owner.
